Balance

According to the National Institutes of Health:

  • 90 million Americans go to health care providers because of vertigo, dizziness or balance problems.
  • Balance is the second most common complaint heard in doctor's offices.
  • Balance problems will occur in 70% of the nation's population at some time in their lives.

Further, according to the Elder Fall Prevention Act of 2002:

  • Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among people over 65.
  • The costs from falls by elderly persons to Medicare and Medicaid programs and society as a whole continue to climb much faster than inflation and population growth.
  • Direct costs alone will exceed $32 billion in 2020

Several things have contributed to the audiologist's clinical role in assessment and management of patients with vestibular disorders:

  • the anatomic link between the auditory and vestibular systems
  • the fact that many patients present with both auditory and vestibular complaints
  • the close collaboration between audiologists and otolaryngologists
  • an increasing orientation to delivery of health care services by interdisciplinary teams
  • changing demographics.
