Evoked Potentials

Despite changes in the use of auditory evoked potentials (AEP) over time, they still provide useful information about the function of anatomical pathways, which is helpful in:

  • Diagnosing hearing loss, acoustic neuroma (tumors of the inner ear) and multiple sclerosis
  • Screening hearing in newborns
  • Assessing hearing thresholds in infants identified as having hearing loss
  • Validating hearing thresholds in some adults
  • Distinguishing damage to the acoustic nerve from damage to the auditory pathways within the brainstem
  • Assessing high-frequency hearing ability
  • Determining brain death
  • Monitoring brainstem function during surgery.
