Evoked Potentials
Despite changes in the use of auditory evoked potentials (AEP) over time, they still provide useful information about the function of anatomical pathways, which is helpful in:
- Diagnosing hearing loss, acoustic neuroma (tumors of the inner ear) and multiple sclerosis
- Screening hearing in newborns
- Assessing hearing thresholds in infants identified as having hearing loss
- Validating hearing thresholds in some adults
- Distinguishing damage to the acoustic nerve from damage to the auditory pathways within the brainstem
- Assessing high-frequency hearing ability
- Determining brain death
- Monitoring brainstem function during surgery.
