Otoacoustic Emissions

Since January 1, 1996, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes have allowed for full reimbursement for either Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions (TEOAE) or Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE).  The speed and objectivity of these responses make them ideal for testing a variety of patients, and for today's fast-paced, outcomes-based managed care environments.

For information about new and revised OAE CPT codes for 2012, click here.  Additional information, including a link to the CMS website, is also available on Medical Technologies' Education and Training page.

Otoacoustic Emissions are used for:

  • neonatal hearing screening
  • pediatric audiometry
  • assessment of functional hearing loss
  • site of lesion testing (differentiation of cochlear vs. retrocochlear dysfunction)
  • monitoring ototoxicity
  • following episodes of Meniere's disease
  • tinnitus evaluation
  • monitoring noise/music exposure.

Medical Technologies provides a variety of OAE equipment options.
